Rules for self-prescribing

Well-chosen homeopathic remedies are safe and gentle in their action, but please remember these simple rules when looking for an appropriate remedy:

Prescribe
    on presenting symptoms only
    mainly on the emotional state
    on anything that is 'unusual'
remember that absence of a certain symptom does not contra-indicate a remedy
only ONE remedy should be taken at one time.
take only one pill at a time (the 'dose'), letting it dissolve slowly under your tongue.
if circumstances allow, do not eat or drink anything for 20mins before or after taking the remedy.
use 6C potency for minor physical complaints which you would expect to recover from relatively quickly.
use 30C potency for symptoms requiring immediate attention and accompanied by great pain or which have lasted for some time.

After taking the first dose, wait for a reaction:

If you improve - don't take any more remedy. Repeat it only when the same symptoms return.
If nothing happens, and you are sure your choice best describes you, repeat. If you improve, STOP. Repeat only when the same symptoms return.
If nothing happens, you probably have the wrong remedy for you, so stop taking it and speak to your homeopath.

ALWAYS STOP once you start to improve, repeating only as needed.
NEVER over-prescribe, as once your natural healing process has begun, a further dose of remedy could disrupt progress.
If in doubt, seek the advice of your homeopath.

Please remember -

If you are currently undergoing treatment from your homeopath, always check before taking any homeopathic remedy which they have not prescribed for you. This way, you can be sure that you do not unwittingly select a remedy which could cause harm if taken straight after your constitutional remedy ,or one which is likely to antidote it so that you lose any benefits you have gained!

Prescribing for yourself is not the best approach, as, being 'involved', you are more likely to miss the clues which an observer would see clearly and use to select the correct remedy. Whenever possible, ask someone who knows you well to help. If self-prescribing does not help after three doses of your chosen remedy, it is probably time to have your case taken by a professional homeopath.

After trying to treat yourself at home, always seek professional homeopathic advice if :

Your symptoms do not improve.
Your symptoms recur.

Diseases Outside the scope of the First Aid Prescriber

Remember to stay safe. Do not attempt to treat yourself for serious injuries, chronic disease, frequently recurring symptoms, skin disease and/or anything in either list below.

Visit your Doctor if you have any of the following, as they will require diagnosis and/or clinical investigation to rule out anything serious:

    Unusual persistent headaches
    A change in character
    Recurring dizzy spells
    Eye condition
    Ear complaint
    Chronic nasal obstruction
    Swollen glands in the neck
Chronic, persistent cough, especially if you are spitting up blood
    Pains through the chest
    Heart palpitations
Shortness of breath on mild exertion
Waking up at night because you find it difficult to breathe
Any swelling of the abdomen which has occurred over a short space of time
Painful areas above or below the navel, especially if accompanied by indigestion
Any abdominal complaint if you are pregnant, especially if pain is localised
Abdominal pains which radiate to the groin
Sudden and unexplained change in bowel habit (especially if you are over 50 years old and there is an increase in frequency.)
Narrow or painful stools, especially if accompanied by a dull ache in the rectal area.
Pale stools (grey or almost white)
    Black or bloody stools
Any lump or enlarged gland anywhere in the body, but especially the armpit, groin or neck.
Continuous loss in weight, even though you continue to eat well.

Get IMMEDIATE HELP if you notice any of the following:

Unexplained bleeding from any part of the body, especially bleeding between periods and recurring or heavy postmenopausal bleeding.

    Rapid breathing when at rest
Convulsions or unexplained loss of consciousness

Persistent cough for over 6 weeks
Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
    Abdominal lump
    Breast lump

Seeing a professional homeopath

This is best done after you have a diagnosis from a medical doctor as anything requiring emergency surgery should not be treated homeopathically. Homeopathic remedies are safe to use if you are already taking prescribed medication, because their action is 'energetic' and not chemical, but please remember to tell your homeopath what you are taking, as this information is important when evaluating your case. Homeopathy can improve your prognosis and reduce your expected recovery time, so please inform your GP or Consultant that you are seeing a homeopath.

People often ask me how long they will need to keep coming back for treatment. This very much depends on the nature of the problem. The treatment of serious degenerative disease, chronic disease or anything troubling you for a long time will require more time to treat than something which has just developed or is an 'acute' illness which is likely to go away of its own accord. The number and frequency of follow-up visits depends on individual progress. Be prepared to come back for at least one follow-up visit and to return whenever you feel any improvements 'slip' so that adjustments to your treatment can be made at the appropriate time.
